I Heart New York Dogs! :-) January 13, 2008

If I could recommend any back-to-back travel, may I suggest Hawaii to New York? The juxtaposition is so great: Colors indicative of 75 degree weather, the ocean song lullaby and limited neighbors contrasted with the hustle, bustle and glorious mayhem in Manhattan on New Year’s weekend. My mind was still in Oahu when I stepped out of Penn Station and someone spit on my shoe. I do love the city! It made me smile because it meant I was in New York and that it had been too long since I last visited. I spent the weekend making friends at a few dog runs and I was in absolute heaven! I couldn’t have asked for a better way to ring in the new year.

Thanks to all the wonderful people and dogs I met in Manhattan: It was a great pleasure to be a part of doggie play time!

Hawaii Part III (Oahu continued) January 7, 2008

When not at “home” playing with Kina, Kea or Marley (the severely precious baby daughter – an actual person that lives upstairs with her two wonderful parents- that the dogs diligently watch over), I met some other friends on the island.

I found this cutie residing by a group of shrimp trucks along the east side. Ain’t nothing better than some hot shrimp from a trailer on the side of the road. I had a plate of lava shrimp that were absolutely divine. Mmmm…..

A doggone good sunset on the North shore.

Who needs balls when you’ve got coconuts?!

And in the absence of coconuts, your very own leash will do. 🙂

I spent a lot of time reading and photographing on the beach. And that suited me just fine. 🙂

Hawaii Part II (Oahu)

After official business was taken care of in Maui, we hopped over to Oahu to stay with friends. My dog fix was soon taken care of just before I went into hospital-worthy withdrawals.

Kina’ole (or Kina, below left whose ears are always up) and Keau’Kea (or Kea, below right whose ears are always down) are the resident ball players and babysitters of this Haleiwa property where our friends reside in a studio apartment.

Our friend’s apartment sits between the stilts of an upstairs home, a sidewalk’s distance from the beautiful breaks of the North Shore. Just heaven. Anyway, Kina is the Mom (get out! Yep, it’s true) and definitely has the independent spirit I find in my own pit. Kea is the very different looking daughter (a recessive lab gene perhaps?) and she is SO sweet.

Pondering Kea.

Happy Kea.

Sleepy Kea. 🙂

Quintessential Kea.

Kina (Mom) guarding her ball even though she wants you to throw it really bad.

Pretty girl Kina.

Mistress Kina.

Above, is what is characteristic of Kina and why I absolutely love her. I slipped out of “bed” early one morning to use the bathroom and found that another woman had quickly taken my place. Within seconds she had fluffed the pillow and squeezed under the blanket. A blurry photo is all I could muster as my eyes were barely open and the light was not yet full morning. But I needed to get proof of this crime. ha ha 🙂 Although the dogs are owned by the friendly folks upstairs, they tend to sleep with whoever closed their screen door last. I found this fact delightful as I was seriously missing my dogs at this point. 🙂

This picture of Kina is what Hawaii was all about for me: Never needing to turn on the air conditioner, always being able to leave your doors open and your bike unchained, a hammock, flip flops, the most beautiful plants, afternoon sunshine and the time to just sit and think.

Hawaii Part I (Maui)

So I was in Hawaii because my hubby had to work there for most of December. Naturally I felt really bad for him and being the good other half that I am, I made it my duty to make sure he didn’t have an incredibly horrible time. So, I reluctantly flew out there knowing that it would be no fun at all. I mean who wants to be stuck in Hawaii…what with that awful weather and dirty air and murky water that comes in via tiny waves? Are you sensing my sarcasm? IT WAS AWESOME! I spent a couple days in Maui, where he was shooting a reality show and while he worked I, of course, put on my animal radar.

I met some gorgeous friends of the avian persuasion. All of which were so friendly!

The closest thing to dogs in this resort area were piglets- yay! They are mini potbellies. The one featured below is Isabella. She wiggles her nose and wags her curly tail when she wants cheerios. hee hee!

Look at that little mouth. Squeeee!

Hand belongs to my friend, Mel, feeding Isabella a ring of heart healthy cereal.

Maui was great and I had a wonderful time. I even jumped off of a really high rock cliff (25-30 ft?) into the ocean. I am not good with heights so after much involuntary leg trembling, vertigo and counting to three about a hundred times I just went for it. It felt great and I’ll never do it again. ha ha! I have a living witness to the event but no pictures as you have to swim out to the cliff to jump it so no cameras were involved. But, I did it, I swear! 😉
